pavement inspection

The municipality of Geraardsbergen

Typically, municipalities face common challenges in managing road maintenance: inspection data is often fragmented, stored on individual disks, or accessible to only a few specialist, while crews spend significant time onsite visually assessing road conditions.

The municipality of Geraardsbergen in Belgium partnered with XenomatiX for a comprehensive pavement inspection. Using advanced 6D road scanning, XenomatiX delivered high-resolution digital images (2D and 3D) of the road network with precise GNSS locations—capturing every crack, rut, and imperfection in the pavement.

Commonly, we still see municipalities keeping inspection data isolated or sharing only top-level insights. In contrast, at Geraardsbergen, all digital data was centralized on a shared server (the local GIS system), making it accessible to multiple stakeholders within the department:

  1. Decision-makers now have access to a detailed view of road quality per street, enabling informed decisions and confident prioritization of maintenance activities.
  2. The maintenance team no longer relies on various onsite inspections and instead consults the digital images directly from their desks.
  3. All stakeholders can see exactly what is happening on the road, collaborate effectively, and prepare their work in advance.

By shifting inspection and planning into a digital, centralized environment, the road department of Geraardsbergen , have increased efficiency, improved collaboration, and optimized road maintenance.

XenomatiX is proud to be part of this shift in road maintenance practices, helping bring innovation and digitalization to the way roads are inspected, planned, and maintained
