LEUVEN, 09.06.2026 – The Belgian Road Research Centre (BRRC) is Belgium’s independent and leading innovation and research institute in the field of road construction, maintenance, and infrastructure performance evaluation.  

BRRC is the leading institution in Belgium’s infrastructure ecosystem, shaping the standards that guide road construction and maintenance, and serving as a trusted expert for complex technical challenges and disputes between road authorities and contractors. Internationally, BRRC is widely recognized for its active contribution to advancing methodologies for pavement evaluation, durability assessment, and infrastructure performance.  BRRC and XenomatiX, pioneer of true solid state lidar technology also based in Belgium, have maintained a long-standing relationship, built on shared interests in improving road safety and comfort through advanced road assessment methods. It is within this context that BRRC’s work closely aligns with XenomatiX’ pavement inspection system. 

BRRC maintains a portfolio of measurement and sensor-based equipment used to evaluate road conditions. When no suitable solutions exist, BRRC actively develops new methods (MN89 on Visual Index, MN94 on PMS, …) and when necessary, even develops bespoken  equipment like the purpose-built wheelchair used to assess sidewalk comfort and accessibility. 

In its ongoing mission to improve the safety, comfort, and durability of transport infrastructure, BRRC has selected XenomatiX’ latest 6D road scanning technology to enable the creation of full digital twins of pavement surfaces across roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks, allowing detailed extraction and analysis of pavement condition data. The detailed dataset gives BRRC the insight needed to optimize road maintenance planning and resource allocation. 

Looking ahead, BRRC plans to deploy the XenomatiX’ system as part of its research and technical activities. Tim Massart of BRRC, comments, “The XenomatiX system will allow us to use this digital version of the public space as ground truth for research projects, will deliver insights during complex technical assistance and will serve as a basis for developing new indicators to manage the assets even more effectively” 

XenomatiX’ 6D road scanning technology enables automated data collection and rapid post-processing capabilities. Its output delivers key standard road indicators such as rutting, longitudinal Evenness Coefficients, IRI, slope and cross-slope, patches, potholes, cracks, raveling, .. up to the Global Index or the PCI. BRRC further favors 6D Road Scanning  due to the added convenience it offers: the use of solid-state area LiDAR—an advanced technology from automotive sensing—combined with the system’s flexibility and transportability, unique but identical for roads, bike lanes and sidewalks.

This collaboration sends a strong signal in addressing a long-standing national challenge: the condition of road infrastructure in Belgium. By deploying XenomatiX’ 6D Road Scanning technology, this will  enable more proactive road maintenance strategies, better-informed decisions, and a measurable improvement in road quality across Belgium.
